Even if You’re Not into Cars, You’ll Probably Like the Auto Show
This was my first time hitting the Michigan International Auto Show. I’m not a big car person (I drive a Sienna) so I never thought this show was for me. But… the show surprised me.

Cars have played a big role in how Michigan grew up.
What if Henry Ford had never built the Model T?
While Detroit was the epicenter of automobile action, greater Michigan was still a big participant. Henry Ford even sourced his lumber from the U.P.
In 1908, the first Model T Ford was completed at the Piquette Avenue plant in Detroit. Now, 112 years later, look at what the auto industry is producing!
I’m glad that there’s a whole section of the auto show dedicated to the story of the automobile. Another Michigan institution, the Gilmore Car Museum, shores this up. It’s the largest Auto Museum in North America, by the way. They transported some of their historical treasures from their 90-acre campus near Kalamazoo to Grand Rapids for the show so you can walk through history (yes, there’s a Model T).
Even if you’re not a car person you can appreciate the collection they’ve put together. Making the 60-minute trip down to the Gilmore Car Museum is now on my list. I hear they even have a Model-T Driving Experience!

One Stop, Warm and Cozy Car Shopping
Hopping from car lot to car lot in the middle of winter to shop for a new car isn’t the most fun.
You likely have a lot of boxes to check on your list as you shop for new vehicle –
- Will my dog fit in here?
- Can I take it camping?
- How much can it tow?
- Can I fit 3 carseats across the back bench in here?
The practicality of putting all of these vehicles under one roof is brilliant. You can talk to people who know a lot about what you’re looking at and narrow down your options to a shortlist in no time, all without going outside.
If West Michigan is nothing else, it’s practical. Point goes to the Auto Show.

Make Your Car Lover Swoon
The last reason on my list to go to the Auto Show? Go for your car lover.
The big names are there – Lamborghini, Rolls Royce, Aston Martin, Bentley, McLaren, and more in the Million Dollar Motorway. It’s not everyday I get to stand next to a $500,000 car.
There’s also a section with ultracustomized high-end vehicles, a muscle car display, and a bunch of vehicles sporting special features as part of the special attractions at the show.
